How thin is Costco's margin? In its fourth quarter, the 16 weeks to 30 August, the warehouse club turned US$95.7bn of revenue into US$3.0bn of net profit.
Most of the money never stays: merchandise costs took US$83.5bn, leaving US$12.2bn of gross profit, and running the warehouses took another US$8.4bn. Operating profit came to US$3.8bn, 4.0% of revenue.
The membership fee is the quiet engine. Fees were US$1.85bn, up 7.3% on a year ago, against operating profit of US$3.8bn. The quarter also had a one-off tariff refund, worth US$0.15 a share.
