What the chart shows

A blocked waterway has done remarkable things to Frontline's accounts. The tanker owner's profit for the June quarter came in at US$659.2 million. A year earlier the equivalent quarter made US$77.5 million.

The mechanics are simple enough. With the Strait of Hormuz shut, the barrels that still move take longer routes, so the same volume of oil ties up more ships for more days. A tanker owner is really renting out time and distance, and both have become scarce. Sharespective's Tuesday edition walks through why shipping stocks were the loud exception on a red Friday.

The chart also carries its own warning. These earnings rest on a shortage of ships, not of oil, and when the strait reopens the routes shorten overnight.
