What the chart shows

Four quarters ago Micron brought in US$11.3bn in three months. In the quarter it reported on Wednesday, it brought in US$54.2bn.

The chart sets each quarter of the financial year just ended beside the same quarter of the year before. The first pair is US$13.6bn against US$8.7bn. By the third it was US$41.5bn against US$9.3bn.

Memory has mostly been a commodity business, where nobody keeps much of each sales dollar and the cycle turns when new supply arrives. Micron is building more plant of its own, which is why Thursday's edition treats the year after next as the one nobody can see yet.
