What the chart shows

The Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 392,700 more people living in the country at the end of March than a year before. Victoria accounted for 109,500 of them, New South Wales 97,000 and Queensland 90,100.

Today's chart ranks the six states by the number of people added in the year to March 2026. Western Australia added 64,200, South Australia 18,400 and Tasmania 3,400. The ACT added 6,200 and the Northern Territory 4,000, and both are listed in the release but left off the bars.

Net overseas migration made up 292,100 of the national figure, down from 309,500 the year before. Sharespective's Tuesday edition has that number alongside Fonterra's new milk price forecast.
